IEEE PES Bangladesh Chapter in collaboration with IEEE PES BRACU Student Branch Chapter & IEEE
BRACU student Branch organized an informative seminar under the title ‘Industrial & Biomedical Applications of Power Electronics’ on 24th of July, 2019. The seminar was conducted by eminent speaker Dr. Faisal Khan who is a senior member of IEEE & an Associate Editor Transaction on Power Electronics. Dr. Faisal Khan is an Associate Professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. The seminar started at 4 pm at the GDLN Centre, Brac University with the room fully packed with students and a number of faculty members from the EEE department of Brac University. The honourable Chairperson of EEE department started the seminar by introducing the speaker and also thanked the speaker for taking his time out and coming to Brac University.
At the beginning of the seminar, Dr. Faisal Khan gave an introduction about his educational background, where he talked about his undergrad life at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, his time at the Arizona State University as a Masters student and also talked about his PhD life at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville. During the seminar, Dr. Khan told about his passion for Power Electronics and shared his story of never losing hope and inspired the students to never give up on their dreams. Dr. Faisal Khan shared about different past & present trends of power electronics where he informed about wide-band gap-semiconductor, converter design for renewable application etc. Moreover, Dr. Khan gave some interesting information on the advantage of increasing switching frequency of circuits, he also talked about new component which behaves like an inductor but not an inductor, explained how power electronics is related to biomedical through an example of powering up the kidney in human body.
In this educational speech of Dr. Khan, he gave some very effective information on how to tackle an IGBT failure, importance of understanding the health of a system etc. Dr. Khan Summarized his speech by informing about various ideas which include how one can design a smart IGBT, new device with new architecture to detect degradation in high power IGBTs and a new concept for gate driver. At the end, he again motivated the students to work with passion and pursue a higher degree in the field of power electronics.
At the end of the talk respected Chairperson of EEE department, Professor Shahidul Islam Khan once again thanked the speaker and invited him to Brac University to teach the students. The Seminar was concluded by handing over a token of appreciation to Dr. Faisal Khan by the honourable Chairperson Professor Shahidul Islam Khan.
