On the 23rd March, IEEE Brac University Student Branch in collaboration with the Power and Energy Society of Brac University Organized 2019’s very first Industrial Tour. This tour took place on the Orion Power Meghnahat Ltd. 30 enthusiastic students along with 2 faculty members from EEE department went on this tour. In order to enhance their practical knowledge and to let them have an overview on the activities related to Power Plant, this tour had been organized. Moreover, this tour worked as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge. After reaching the destination students were introduced to the Power Plant through an Introductory Presentation so that they could have a better understanding of applied knowledge. Shortly after the presentation students were taken to industrial tour in 4 small groups and each group were assisted by an experienced Engineer from the Orion Group. During this industrial tour students were taken to see the inside of a HFO based Power Plant producing 100 MW power with 12 Wartsila diesel engines. During this trip students also learned about SF6 circuit breaker, 132KV substation which contained three 11KV/132KV transformers. On top of that they got to visit the Switch Gear Control room and at the same time learned how to work for the protection of a power plant.
Later on students were offered a nice lunch by the Orion Group. At the end the Vice President of the Orion Group asked for any type of feedback regarding the Power Plant and the tour, lastly he concluded the session by assuring to be more careful in the safety measurements for the Power Plant.
Finally at the end of this tour all the students agreed on the fact that industrial tours like this will bring them closer to the practical area and could be helpful to validate their theoretical knowledge so that they can prepare themselves better for a successful career.
