On December 23, 2024, BRAC University hosted an extraordinary seminar titled “Entangled Minds: Exploring Quantum Computing” organised by the IEEE Computer Society BRAC University Student Branch Chapter (IEEE CS BRACU SBC). The event, which marked a significant milestone in the exploration of cutting-edge technology, drew an audience of nearly 70 enthusiastic students from diverse academic disciplines. Unlike traditional seminars, this event was designed as an engaging panel discussion, featuring distinguished faculty members. Together, they shed light on the transformative field of quantum computing, captivating the audience with their insights, experiences, and vision for the future.

The panel comprised three esteemed speakers: Mr. Sowmitra Das, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE); Mr. Jishnu Mahmud, Lecturer, Department of CSE; and, Mr. Shadman Shahriar,  Lecturer, Department of CSE. Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the discussion, blending technical expertise with personal anecdotes about their journey in quantum computing.

The session began with an introduction to the speakers’ academic and professional paths. They shared how they delved into quantum computing, a field once considered esoteric but now emerging as a cornerstone of technological innovation. Their candid accounts of challenges, discoveries, and the evolving landscape of quantum research struck a chord with the audience, inspiring many to explore this revolutionary domain.

BRAC University has established itself as a trailblazer in quantum education in Bangladesh. As of now, it is the only university in the country to offer 2 quantum computing courses at the undergraduate level, reflecting its commitment to fostering innovation and academic excellence. During the seminar, the speakers revealed exciting news: a new course titled “Advanced Quantum Computing” is set to be introduced next year. This development underscores the university’s dedication to staying ahead of the curve and preparing students for the demands of a quantum-driven future.

The seminar delved into fundamental and advanced topics in quantum computing. The speakers provided a balanced mix of theory and practical insights, covering areas such as:

  • Quantum Algorithms: An introduction to groundbreaking algorithms like Shor’s Algorithm, which revolutionized cryptography, and Grover’s Algorithm, which accelerates database searches.
  • Quantum Mechanics: An overview of concepts like superposition and entanglement, which form the foundation of quantum computing.
  • Quantum Error Correction: A crucial aspect of making quantum computations reliable and scalable for real-world applications.
  • Future Possibilities and Innovations: The speakers discussed the transformative potential of quantum computing in industries such as cryptography, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and climate modelling.

Throughout the session, the panellists introduced  renowned scientists who shaped the field to the audience, including the likes of Peter Shor, David Deutsch, and Lov Grover; thereby,  offering students a historical perspective on the evolution of quantum computing. At the beginning of the discussion, two videos were also presented  to make students understand the basics of quantum computing and its applications.

The seminar was not just about delivering lectures—it was an interactive and motivating experience. The speakers encouraged students to ask questions, resulting in an engaging Q&A session that touched on topics ranging from the practical implementation of quantum algorithms to the ethical considerations of quantum advancements, and more advanced topics like Quantum Computing and Biology, and questions such as Graph Theory and Quantum Computing. The thought-provoking discussions fueled curiosity and underscored the importance of fostering a research-oriented mindset.

One of the highlights of the event was a quiz session conducted toward the end. Designed to test students’ understanding of the topics covered, the quiz sparked excitement and healthy competition among participants. Three students stood out with their correct answers and were rewarded with chocolates as tokens of appreciation. This lighthearted yet meaningful activity added a memorable touch to the seminar, reinforcing the importance of active participation and learning.

The seminar concluded on a high note, with the speakers urging students to embrace quantum computing as a field of study and research. They emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, and computer science, while also staying curious and adaptable in the face of technological advancements.
