On April 18, 2024, the IEEE CS BRAC University Student Branch Chapter successfully conducted a highly informative and engaging webinar titled “Empowering Futures: Insights from a REM Scholarship Recipient.” The webinar aimed to enlighten students about the prestigious Richard E. Merwin (REM) Scholarship, providing them with comprehensive insights into the application process, eligibility criteria, and the benefits of receiving this esteemed award. Almost 40 participants joined the webinar.

The event featured Mr. Md. Tabil Ahammed, a distinguished recipient of the REM Scholarship. Mr. Tabil, who received the scholarship last year, shared his personal experiences and the profound impact the scholarship has had on his academic and professional journey. He emphasised the importance of the REM Scholarship, which is recognized and awarded to active student volunteer leaders in IEEE Student Branches or Computer Society Chapters.

The REM Scholarship is highly competitive, with 40 awards given annually, each worth $1,000. Mr. Tabil broke down the various marking criteria for the scholarship, which include IEEE Branch or Chapter Activities (30%), Academic Achievements (30%), Extracurricular Activities (10%), a letter of recommendation from the student branch or chapter advisor (20%), and the Quality of the Student Ambassador Vision Statement (10%).

During the webinar, Mr. Tabil provided invaluable tips and strategies on how students can effectively present their applications to stand out. He discussed the significance of demonstrating active involvement and leadership in IEEE Branch or Chapter activities, highlighting how these contributions can significantly enhance a student’s profile. Mr. Tabil also shared his thoughts on academic excellence, advising students to maintain high academic standards and engage in extracurricular activities that reflect their commitment to community service and personal development.

One of the key segments of the webinar was Mr. Tabil’s detailed guidance on writing compelling letters of recommendation. He stressed the importance of building strong relationships with faculty advisors and mentors, who can provide insightful and personalised recommendations. Mr. Tabil also shared examples of effective Student Ambassador Vision Statements, offering practical advice on how to articulate a clear and inspiring vision for their role as an IEEE student leader.

The event was highly interactive, with students actively participating in the Q&A session. Mr. Tabil addressed various queries, ranging from specific application procedures to broader questions about career development and the role of IEEE in fostering professional growth. The webinar gave the students motivation, knowledge, insight, and the tools to apply for the REM Scholarship.

The webinar not only provided critical information about the REM Scholarship but also inspired students to take an active role in their IEEE chapters, pursue academic excellence, and engage in community service. It underscored the value of leadership, dedication, and vision in achieving personal and professional success.
